Background
Net Collective was originally founded in 2002 as an internet consultancy and services business. The company helped a wide range of clients, from high profile rock bands and national politicians to small, local companies, shape their presence on the internet. Net Collective also provided traditional software development services. One project was building a touchscreen application to mix ringtones using samples produced by indie musicians, which featured on several major festivals in the Netherlands and abroad (including Lowlands and Mundial).
In 2008 the decision was made to change our focus from consultancy to our own internet projects and open source development. Costs were cut dramatically and the hosting part of the business was sold to a competitor to make up for the loss of income from consultancy. We also sold our downtown office building to go back to the lean footprint of a startup.
Today, Net Collective is working on various internet projects. A lot of this work is still in the incubation stage. The business model is creating value, by building innovative websites and web applications. Eventually, this value can be monetized through advertising, providing leads to online merchants and offering premium "software as a service" subscriptions.
